He was the Founding Partner of Baring Asia’s Beijing office. Prior to that, he was with Merrill Lynch Asia Pacific doing equity research, focusing on media and retail sectors. In the 1990s, Mr Tsang began his career at Peregrine Investment Holdings, where he was involved with Asian fixed income sales and marketing. Since 2016, he became Founder and Chairman of Strategic Year Holdings Limited.

Mr Tsang is currently President and Executive Director of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (HKVCA). Previously, he was Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association’s Chairman of the Board (2013-2015). Mr Tsang is also General Member of the Hong Kong Cyberport Investors Network. Prior to founding Strategic Year Holdings Limited, he was Senior Advisor, Asia with Apollo Education Group, a US higher education company.

Mr Tsang obtained a Master’s Degree in Management Studies at University of Oxford, United Kingdom; and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (First Class Honors) at Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, United Kingdom. He also completed an executive program on Private Equity and Venture Capital at Harvard Business School, US.

Her career began with magazine editing, including several years in the mid-1980s working in the City of London, where she edited high-end magazines for the City’s top team of retail analysts, moving with them from brokers Capel-Cure Myers to Wood Mackenzie.

A switch to the voluntary sector then saw her editing Orbit magazine for UK-based NGO Voluntary Service Overseas (VS0). From there she moved into overseas program development, opening VSO’s program in Cambodia in the early 1990s before joining Save the Children UK. Starting as London-based coordinator for the Iraq program following the Kurdish humanitarian crisis, she was then director of Save the Children’s program in Cambodia from 1993-7, developing its activities in the fields of child rights, child protection and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Concurrently pursuing an interest in Buddhism, Joan then moved to Japan to take up a career with the grassroots Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Buddhist network that promotes peace and individual empowerment for positive change. Over the past 20 years, she has helped develop the SGI’s communications outreach, including from magazines to websites, films and social media, and is also involved in their NGO and non-formal education initiatives, particularly in the field of sustainable development. She is also women’s leader for the SGI Tokyo International Group.

Joan is also actively involved in the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, a member of the Global Advisory Board of Ethical Markets and recently completed the Capra Course on The Systems View of Life. Hobbies include cooking, eating, walking her friend’s dog and her balcony garden.
